Hello all. I have been lurking on this forum for the past week or so. I recently found a company that I can team up with to produce fiberglass parts.

My task is to create original pieces. I have been reviewing many projects posted around the internet and the top two materials that I may consider are clay or plaster.

The projects are going to be simple. The first will be a 3 piece rear spoiler similar to the image below:
http://www.lextasy.com/images_products/gs_300_400_lexus_l_b1300.jpg

The second project is a rear deck spoiler, similar to an E46 M3 rear spoiler.

So with the projects in mind, what would be the recommended material? I am leaning towards clay.

Thank you for any advice I get. I apologize for being so inexperienced in a sea of professionals.

Chris

I'm not really an expert on this, but I once came across some kind of green polystyrene brick the you can use..you can bond the together and you can sculpt them to the desired shape and size..

They seem to be very lightweight..dunno much about em though..maybe you should try and google some on making things out of fiberglass..
hope this helps..

OK Chris,

The beauty of clay is, you can keep changing it until you're happy with the design. You can then take a plaster mold from that clay model and produce your first prototype from that mold, which you can then again modify until that first piece fits perfect. From the first fiberglass you can then produce master molds for your end fiberglass parts. You will also find that the clay is friendlier to your donor vehicle, that being said providing you don't scratch the paint job with your modeling tools.

To make the clay stick to the donor vehicle use doublesided tape, mask out all areas that you want to keep clear of clay. By masking out the areas it will also protect the vehicle from getting scratched.
