I am currently working on my portfolio which will be made up of car sketches, drawings and 3D renderings of cars and products. At auto clay modellers world forums I have been adviced by another clay modeler that the best way to get a start in this business is to complete my portfolio first and then knock on the door of as many companies as possible. Then asking them for a position as a trainee. He said that going to a design college and getting a degree is a complete waste of time and money if you want to be a clay modeler but he did say that learning alias studio was a good idea. I would like to hear other clay modelers advice on how they got a start in the clay modelling business and what they think would be the best way to get started in clay modeling.
Thanks for that information. I know what is involved in the position as a clay modeler in the prototype stage but I am trying to find out if it is necessary to do a two or four year auto design digree just to get in to a clay modelling position. As someone else mentioned that a lot of design graduates don't make it in to a design job so they fall back on clay modelling jobs instead. Now that I realise this I think the best chance for me on landing that first clay modelling position will depend on having a design degree.
