Hi everyone, there is a lot of information on this forum and i was wondering if anyone could simplify it all? Could we make a sticky of a beginners like guide to clay modeling showing things like...
Tools needed Type of clay to be used Paints and finishes needed The process of sculpting etc.
If not then perhaps a list of the best tutorial sites to get started on clay modeling?
okey dokey, heres ur simple-as-pie guide to the wonderful world of clay modelling.
types of clay used are usually Faber or Chavant, both are hard when at room temperature but soften when heated in a special clay oven.
in automotive scale models clay is usually applied to an armature, a stucture built up into the rough shape of the vehicle. clay is gradually applied until a layer about 2-5cm depending on how much sculpting is to be done.
there is a large range of tools that are used for the sculpting part, including a variety of thin metal sheets, scrapers of various sizes and anything u can find lying around that does the job.
gradually the clay is scraped away until the desired form is achieved. after this is done the clay can either be painted or cast. painting is quicker and easier but it means the model is very heavy and easy to damage. if it is cast is something like GRP then many models can be made from the mould and they are lighter, but it means u need to spend ages sanding it to get a good finish.
this is a really basic guide to how it works, and its pretty much the extent of my knowledge, but i hope it helps.
