Looks like what it is ... a 3 with a coupe roof. So what's the big deal?
This isn't the first time I've heard that observation, and I don't understand it at all. Have you seen the 3 series sedan? Point out to me one external panel or fitting that is shared with this coupe. The nose and tail are completely different, and the car itself has a much more slender look than the sedan, less stocky. The only thing shared visually is the dash. Really, try putting your whole ass into a post next time.
Yes, nice design, but I also wish it had MORE Bangle butt. (aka segmented trunk, elevated boot, NewYork taxi trunk advert sign, bustle back, etc.)
The 7-series had many critics but now the much-maligned rear-end has been copied or adapted by Lexus GS, Infiniti M, Toyota '06 Camry, Hyundai Azera, Honda Civic coupe, etc...

i feel the same that rear was made for the bangle butt, it would look so right on this on model,
the m3 excites me more than this does but i like it..its smooth and sharp, but too toned down...the sedan should be toned down and the coupe should be as loud and harsh as the sedan
I am not very fond of bimmers but this one looks like a total winner. Even though I agree with the bangle butt thing, you have to admit this ones rear is 300% better than the sedans.
This one caught me by surprise. I like the design, no question. Something about it is odd. For one, It has a classy look, very professional for a 3 series. At first glance it looks like it's saying luxury tourer, instead of sporty coupe; Particularly since Bangles flame surfacing and dashing lines aren't prominent. Two things that I question after seeing these images: (1). Why did they need to change the front lights from the sedan? Individuality and distinction between the two is my guess. I love the flaming orange turn indicators flanking the head lights on the sedan, I don't see them on the coupe in these pics. and (2). though the rear is very attractive, I couldn't help but think of the 02-05 Lexus ES especially from this angle: http://i3.tinypic.com/vscot0.jpg Overall I think Bimmer is showing they can produce a sophisticated-looking sporty design.
