Each company is different and looks for different things. That's why at CCS the teachers encouraged us to take a variety of classes, including a product class or two.
Some companies want to see those fancy sketches that show a high degree of creativity. While others are only interested in your problem solving and modelling skills.
I had two interviews with a company that only wanted to see my model and my orthographics. They told me my sketches were not important to them. They even went off on CCS calling it a "Stylist school".
I later found out that some of these smaller companies and design firms were all about function and engineering. They designed stuff like construction equipment, tractors, dump trucks, and fork lifts.
This actually made me and other students work harder so we wouldn't end up designing stuff like that. We had some very talented designers from Ford and GM that would tell us to strike a creative balance between style and function.
I dont know but I got quite a shock when I opened an evelope at home yesterday, it was the latest Auto & Design, at first glance i thought it was a spoof! the cover threw me, as i flicked through the quality of pro car designers and student car designers looked to have slipped down a few pegs, a few pages escluded the citoen gt, vw roadster, volvo, otherwise it looks like this edition is struggeling for quality, not quanitiy... any other readers amazed at the red renderings?.....
The shape of a modern car is actually determined by a sketch the CEO has done after reviewing all his competitors products, and recommendations made by his top engineers.
Sounds like Chrysler in the Sixties and Seventies! Sixties Imperials looked kind of like four year old Lincolns. Then in the Seventies, Dodges looked like three year old Buicks!
