As you can see, im new here, and im only 15,Anyway, Im super uber duper happy to find this site and disappointed in an other way, I always wanted to be vehicular designer and i thought that drawing 3d models weren't mandatory, I can draw but i have been drawing only blue-print designs ever since i was a child, when i recently saw this site i was kinda sad to find out that all of you guys are 3d model experts(as in drawing perfect 3d models with the bare hand). which im not so good in.

Im 15 so college is in 4 years, is 4 years enough to become an expert in traditional hand drawing(3d)..

becuase im pretty worried i wont get into a design school if i cant draw perfect 3d models with hand, thats why i been drawing models the past 3 days non-stop, to practice.

I thought designing was done in programs like CAD/AutoCAD and other programs so i didnt really worry about hand drawing.

Im good in other areas such as clay modeling too.

Sorry for the long Post but i really needed to find out whether 3d hand drawing was a big chunk of entering a designing career.

(All help appreciated),thanks.

Hey there.
Okay bad news first... 3D drawing( or perspective drawing as we like to call it) is a HHUUGGEE part of being a designer. In fact its okay if you dont know AutoCAD or Alias, if you dont know how to sketch...well you aint gonna be designer antime soon.Thats because most of the time designers need to THINK in 3D and use sketches to solve practical problems. How long should the console be? How much space can I get when the rear seats are folded?. It's these problems which designers to solve before making funky designs.

Okay now the good news. You have got a ton of time to practice!!! There are people on this site who decided to become designers barely two years before entering ACCD or CCS. The only thing they had in common? PRACTICE!! 3D drawing is NOT easy. If you saw any of my drawings at 15 and now, trust me you would feel a lot better. The best thing to do is to refer tutorials and books. There's a ton of help on the internet and books as well. Or if your lucky, you can find an art teacher and get some tuition.

It takes a lot of hard work to be a designer which is why only the best go on to be great designers. If you love what you do there is really nothing you cant do. Lots of great designers started out where you are now.Just keep practicing and you will never look back

Hope this helps...and welcome to CDN!!

don't get frustrated if your first attemps don't look like you want them to look
if you have the passion, practise is the key to success
