lol before i knew how popular the art center was i got brochures from the art university at san franc to check out the tranposrtation design classes. then i discovered cardesignnews and never heard anyone talk about the school so i knew the school sucked or something lol
im a student at aau, 3rd yr. anyway, we have a really good trans program, ranked 3rd in the country behind art center and ccs, and even thats debatable. there's great class instructors with industry experience and the head of the department is tom matano, who is amazing and personally teaches trans 3, 5 and 6. We excel with clay model making. at most schools, you'll come out with maybe 2-3 models, but here we graduate with 4 clay models, and you'll more than likely have alias models for all of those... lots of good portfolio stuff. the school has an open enrollment policy, but thats also why we have a huge drop-out rate; the school is easy to get in but has a VERY intense and rigorous trans program. not for the weak-spirited. and carbondesigns, don't talk s**t on schools you know nothing about, especially as a highschool student. Take Pforzheim for example. its one of the best in the world but its rarely ever brought up here. doesn't mean it sucks. anyway "nikhillengade", you should just go to the school website, or call, and get some info. maybe schedule a visit if you're serious about it.
lol i know ur pissed but this is the truth, it doesnt have a name or history which is important if you want to be a designer for major car companies, they want to see u come from a school that is hard to get into.
and whered u get that aau thing ranked third because i got this from art center's web page: "Top 3 Industrial Design Schools
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS 1. Art Center College of Design 2. University of Cincinnati 3. Pratt Institute
well i saw the rankings on an international survey that tom printed... i can't remember which one, it was probably a half yr. ago. anyway, don't you think that maybe sourcing something from art center might be a bit biased, to say the least? i see they don't even include ccs on there, which is clearly wrong. perhaps that's ranking schools that award BSA degrees, as opposed to BFAs. i don't know.
also, the school has been around for a while (1929), and is pretty damn well known for what we do. it's the largest private art school in the country. (about 9,000 students) and most importantly, the job you get after graduating is based on your portfolio and the connections you made/networking you did while in school (including interships, etc.). your work speaks for you, whether you have a better school name behind you or not. i can promise you that there's people that graduate from art center who don't have great portfolios, and who might loose a job to a grad. of a small school with a good portfolio. it all comes down to the effort you put into your education. i know art center is the best, but don't rule out everyone else.
also, you might want to check out some of the other threads on here about art center.. they're not so much the becon of amazing education they used to be.
CD: please stop worshiping accd ...you'll be let down.
I use this qoute allot but its my favorite, a teacher told me this at ccs (he went to wayne state) "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU GO IF YOU HAVE THE TALENT AND DEDICATION YOU'LL BE SUCCESSFUL ANYWHERE."
AM design good point about Phorzheim.
For trans: Having attended both CCS and now ACCD i can say no school is better, it just depends on the talent of the graduated class. for example the ACCD class that just graduated was much stonger than the CCS class. But the senior class this year at CCS is much stronger than the ACCD students.
So I believe its a toss up between ACCD/CCS. AAU in my opinion would be next then CIA and Cincinati. doesn't mean you can't be successful at other school's besides ACCD/CCS but they clearly aren't as stong as programs.-by the way i've toured all these schools, know many students from them and talked with all the trans chairs
Pratt/cranbrook etc focus less on design and more on the thought process, i kinda think they end up being bad designers because...well the can't communicate visually.
Thread is way off topic...
Good luck at am AAU amdesign do you know david hersch out of curiosity? i went to ccs with him.
