hello, im 22 years old, i was thinking of applying to ACCD and CCS for transportation design. not too sure if my work will be good enough for a portfolio. can you guys give me some feedback! cheers!
PS even though the academny of arts san fran debate has been goin on for a while, i was wondering if you could advice me on whether I should join the Bfa second degree course there(which is of 2 years duration), coz i already have a bachelors in mechanical engineering and i dont think i can do another 4 year undergrad course!
I don't think a Masters program is right for someone like you. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend it for most people, regardless of the school. The most successful Masters students are those who have a BS or BA degree in a CLOSELY related design field like Industrial Design - and already have the main tools of drawing, design methodology, presentation techniques, etc. Some Trans grads, who didn't quite manage to reach the point where they could get a job in the field, might also benefit from an upper level program. Your portfolio work indicates that you should consider starting up in a regular FOUR year program and forget the shortcut ideas, which won't work for you anyway. By the way, I taught at AAU for three years (undergrad) and was an advisor to the Master's program there, in addition to mentoring some of those people.
Thanks for the reply reply aflo! can you tell me the main difference between the Bfa 2 year course offered in AAU and their regular 4 year course? Also i would really appreciate it if you could give me some pointers on my how to improve my drawing/sketching skills. Please may i have your email address. thanks
I agree with AFLO - you need to start from the beginning and do at least 4 years. You have a LONG way to go - I doubt your current work would even get you considered for a good (ACCD, CCS) 4 year program.
If you actually want to get a job in automotive design someday, then there is no shortcut for you. However, if all you want to do is play around and have friends and family tell you what you are doing looks cool only to end up hopelessly unemployed, then go to AAU. The field is simply too competitive and you need too much help to risk your future with second rate programs and looking for the easy way out.
Thanks a lot for the comment tixe, and for your (brutal) honesty! I will take it in the only way i know, ie constructively. I actually really DO want a job in the automotive design field, and that is the only reason i actually started drawing abt 2 yrs ago. my only excuse for the quality of work is that i havnt been doin this long enough, and i have been drawing only when time permits(i am a mechanical engineer). But im not making excuses!
Where do you think i should concentrate to improve my drawing skills? can i have some suggestions as to how i to go about making a decent portfolio? can any of these works be used for my portfolio? thanks
