Hey there guys/gals, Great Site/forum, been a reader for a very long time, but decided its time to post as I'm in a spot of bother...

I'm a few months away from finishing my A-levels and was just looking over my UCAS application and got thinking, is Automotive Design right for me?!

I know deep down I love drawing cars and would be a dream to do it for a living, but if I do Automotive design at Coventry, At the end of it, Am I gonna get a job?! Would it be better to take a different design course which could give me a better chance at employment?

Thank you,

Ramin.

Depends how good you are.

If you can be a good salesman of your work and have a s**t hot folio, you will succeed. 75 of us (2005 Grads)graduated but only a handful have jobs and only a handful will ever get jobs.
The car design industry is a cut throat world and if your not prepared to to a bit of prostitution and/or back stabbing you will get no where.

Its up to you!

You can still go to Cov and come out with a degree in Automotive design and still go into other design areas. There are many who have gone into product/yacht/concept design etc. Concept is rare though but hes right....its your decision.

RCARR, are you saying that Coventry graduated SEVENTY-FIVE people in Transportation Design in the same year? Is this typical of their graduating classes?

Yes, they're letting too many people on the course in 1st year and they're not as tough as they used to be, because the government is forcing the uni to accept more people on the course.

10-15 years ago, they only had maybe 30 people accepted onto the course in 1st year and maybe 25 would graduate and they would all get jobs. Now, cov are accepting 150+ in 1st year and so many are graduating.

I could name students who graduated with us (me included) shouldn't have graduated because the work wasnt up to industry standard.

Coventry has slipped in terms of the "best transport design course in the world" because they are producing so many crap designers.

On the other hand, with so many unis offering car design now, the car design world has been flooded with designers and not enough to go round. I know a few fantastic designers who should be working for major manufacturers but the jobs are not there for them to have.

Experience is another matter...

75!!?!! Holy *@#&#^*!&!!!

That's almost a crime. I can't imagine there are even that many open positions across the World. My graduating class had 4!!! At the time I don't think there were much more than 10 positions open across the entire US.

I think Universities should show more ethics and stop turning out grads like they're burgers at McDonalds.

I've heard the argument before "the government makes us do it..." This is a convenient excuse when the probable reason is $$$$$. Just how much does one of those students cough up to the school over a four year course?
It is a fraud. Somehow the medical and law schools don't do this, as far as I know.

Youre a moron. You dont have to prostitute yourself or back stab to get anyhwere, you just need to be bloody good and work harrd. If youre trying to get soemwhere by back stabbing people then no wonder youre unemployed, useless and unliked by your coursemates. What a great attitude youve got. onion.

Each UK student has to cough up £1000+ per year and of course you have to pay accomodation etc, if you are very lucky, your Local Education Authority will pay it tuition fees and give you a loan, if you are poor, and if you are not, your LEA might give you a loan. As for overseas students, I can only tell you about the Masters courses I have been on.
Since we graduated, top up fees are being introduced which means the UK students might have to pay up to £3000 a year. But this won't deter people from trying to get a space on a transport course. As for medicine, you have to get straight As at school to be accepted, so only brainy people can get be accepted.

A little harsh Randy.

I havent back stabbed anyone! I have only tried to gain employment for a few months before I got onto another course.

The times I have been offered a placement or a job, I have been in the middle of uni work.
