I believe they will be more noticeable and more appreciated in the future, as things are already starting to shift towards a focus on design. And no, technology will definitely not replace designers within the next 10 or however many years.

I think Ewan McGregor was close to the mark (but not date) in Trainspotting when he said;

"A thousand years from now they're will be no guys and no girls, just w*nkers. Sounds great to me."

in the future production processes would of changed so dramatically that personal at-home production would be possible. consumers will be able to download designs from the internet, or create them themselves, and then "print" the new product in 3D in their own home. as for car design, of course designers will still be required, but the role will be very different from how it is now. mass production may be replaced with factories producing vehicles all individually designed to each owner's preference. and cars themselves will change in the future, the main influence on change being environmental responsibility. how cars are disposed of will change, as will fuel sources and production methods. improvements in technology will probably see control being taken away from drivers and given to intelligent networked computer systems, simultaneously controlling whole groups of cars at high speed.

how to do i know this? ive been there. now please excuse me i have to fill the Mr Fusion on my DeLorean and go back to 1985.

nano-assembler 'mints' could do exactly this. Matter flow of basic production materials would replace electricity as the primary resource delivered to each home.

Rather than asking a bunch of priapic under-read teenagers why not read some proper PSYENCE?
Topics range from cellular scaffold engineering to novel nanotech applications, and there are lots of ideas here for medium-term future transport concepts that make the slug-drive look like its from (my) old-skool.
