you're going to be applying for undergrad auto/trans design. a levels are definitely enough, assuming your doing the obvious ones like art, tech etc.
as for your portfolio question, get a collection of your best works basically. and i don't mean all of your final renderings, get some sketches in there, any random stuff you are proud of. also, have variety: when i went to cov folio review, they said the stuff i was doing was great, just needed to broaden my range to not just cars. i had put in like products, shoes and stuff, but they wanted more different things. mine was about 75% cars, and 25% other stuff. try to make it more 60, 40 or maybe even 50/50.
this is just my view, got me an offer from cov n hudds, hope it will you (of course if thats where youre applying to)
basically what paul was trying to say is show them "how you think and how good you can draw" dont worry too much on photoshop or alias skils. i would strongly suggest to show one proccess of a design rather than 5 finalized work if you're applying to artcenter or ccs. of course, theres many ways to apply. gluck
cheers Beckett, so just stick mostly skecthes and development of work, is there particuly any need for photo renders? I have started keep a note pad of random ideas I come up with, could I add this to my portfolio as well. thanks... you been loads of help.
one last thing, dont forget, though i both mentioned about the design process in rough sketches, but once you put them into your portfolio, make sure the work are neat and shows clear visual presentation, dont put things everywehere where there's no start or end. i would also suggest you to post some simple work so i can give you some mandatory feedbacks.
This is some simple skecthes for a compition I was going to enter. Designing a vehicle to be able to go on the moon. I decided on some sort of transport. Kind of like a bus, but goes on the moon, which allows a smoother ride over the rocks e.t.c.
these are only the first development steps at the moment.
this is great, it shows alot of relationship between your sketches and your computer rendering. first off, relax your lines. try to smooth the entire drawing, it seems alittle rough to start off. second watch your composition, dark lines shows near and light lines shows distanced. dont be scared, take all the risk you can. what i mean is to exaggerate your skills of drawing. show me more when you try it out. gluck.
Thanks for your comments on my sketches. Please comment more. I have another question though, I am uncertain whether to go straight to university after 6th Form or to do a year at college(art and design course) before going university. Which would be best and can people share there experiences of going Uni or College first.
VERY good question. alot of people seems to struggle weither if they should take prep-major courses or g-e courses. what i would tell you is go straight into a university. you should think about why. if you have questions let me know.
