If I get your first question right - the answer can totally vary for some people (it can be the combo of two answers below)
1. Awesome design talent and good instinct for (car) styling.
2. Awesome BS (bull$hit)ability to sell yourself in front of your prospective employer.
Car rendering and sketching skills are usually included in the curriculum, the answer is yes there are classes.
Idea development will be very similar to product design. You look for opportunities, and design your stuff around them. Nothing massively different.
In general sense transportation design is basically product design, the obvious difference is the scale of the product.
Products are small and can be handled by the users, vehicles (cars, train, boat, etc) consists of many products integrated into the overall design, and usually the user is smaller than the vehicle itself.
The part that makes transportation design more unique is the styling, because cars need to express emotions, stance, speed, etc.
