What I meant by stating as how you are as a person is not the typical 'hey, I am nice and I love being kind' but more on the side of, 'I can show you that I am determined to learn and even with my portfolio alone I hope to show you the growth of my personal efforts'. They do not expect us to be experts already, which is the very reason why we attend college and universities.

That's what I was hoping you meant, but be careful how you word such a statement since it can be seen in so many different ways. I guess it would be better to say, The best portfolios reflect a person's attitude and growth as a designer/artist?
