I live 10 minutes away from sheffield, in a little place called Barnsley where there is hardly any ambition at all, a lot of people i know just arent interested in doing something they actually like, or furthering themselves. Oh well, the reason i'm coming to Cov isn't to get wrecked every night, i could have easily gone to Huddersfield but dont get me wrong i want to meet as many new people as i can and make some good new friends along the way
"Whether we like it or not vagrants are as much a part of the urban environment in Coventry as streetlights and stabbings. Their pleas for financial assistance should be treated with polite apologies that 'youre just a student and have only got £2 for some fags until Dad sends the next cheque' as they are likely to unexpectedly lean forward and pierce your eyeball with an old syringe or broken shard of a bottle of own-brand gin."
Originally posted by Janet Dobinson: Coventry is not like other cities. Theres minimal nightlife, work is hard to find, the locals are poor and generally hostile, the other students are not the sharpest knives in the drawer etc. The streets throng with alcoholics and mutants and everyone seems content to wallow in their decrepit ruin of a town, stumbling around on twisted legs in a mood of mellow despair that can be infectious to the most ambitious designer. Even though its smack in the Midlands you'll notice there's no Coventry accent, presumably because there's zero civic pride and no-one wants to be known to be from Cov. It aint Sheffield or Leeds or anywhere good buddy, sorry.
Janet is spot on!
But you'll enjoy it anyway, trust me.
Let us know when you're in Whitefriars or the Oak or something and we'll get some second years together to say hello
I work in a big bar in cov and Ive never had any trouble, no more than I wouldve had in liverpool. Ok so liverpools more friendly, but cav aint as bad as everyone says. It has its bad parts and its good parts. just learn which are which very quickly and everyone will be fine. I recommend staying away from gangs of kosovans and white chavs - theyre the dangerous ones. Everyone else needs to be provoked before they do something (thats just my experience tho)
finally in coventry... today's the last day of fresers week...i thought it was alright, covetry doesnt seem to be a bad place after all, from what i've noticed, its up to you if you wanna make friends, you have to make the first move, you cant just sit there and expect ppl to come and say "alright mate, hows it goin..." you know what i mean? maybe this weekend i'll go and explore the city a bit more...i got lost a lot of times, more recently on my way the train station, i got so confused i nearly cried, it was about 10:30pm..at the end i found a taxi...
anyways about the course, there's about 100-130 students (all squashed in GS116 room)...Rollo and some other graduates (dont know if they're on CDN forums) came and talked to us about the course and that..the tutors gave us this challenge where we had to build a bridge for a 500mm gap using 2bags of spaghetti and masking tape, thought that was alright...just looking forward to next week and get to know more lads from the course really...
i live in apollo j block. the room is nice...bloody freezing sometimes, the radiator decides to turn off in the middle of the night, just like that. the carpet's got all kinds of stains on it (i dont wanna know what the previous tenant was up to). the food is alright, but the other day i had a veggie lasagne which tasted like veg thats gone bad...but still, it fills me up, i dont have to wash any plates, there's a telly in the canteen, what more can a student ask for
all n all..i think its gonna be a great 4 years in cov uni..as long as i watch out for them kosovans and chavs...thanks for the tip cfru
There's a canteen at Apollo??!!Watch out for them ants. Ah, pennies dropped, cfru. How's dogma? You still there?I'm back in cov now, v. strange after 5 months away...guess I'll see you monday. Glad you've not found it too bad a picture flair- you'll make loads of mates, and hopefully av a laff.
