Hallo hallo, long time no see indeed. My personal male is raptisster@gmail.com. Sent some news.

After a really cool year in italy, (collaborating with Lamborghini) i finished my masters and i am currently designing yachts in vienna, KKG. The boss provides house, car and bills + an average salary, so its not so bad.vienna, as you probably know, needs no introductions, although it gets rather cold in the winter.

As far as the placement, i never said its useless. I said that you dont need to spent an extra year in uni to do it. By the way, i did a placement of 4 months last summer that i found on my own. that was were i am currently working now.

Now, for the 4 Mdes year course, that I CHOSE not to do, despite carens objections, well many people who did it, including some tutors, have the same opinion as me, although different things work differently for different people.
I just think that is better to do a masters after a 3 year course, since academically as well as practically, (Industry wise) is far moer reckognised. Dont forget that you had a good placement. How many had your luck?

For the rest of the guys, you have to remember that these are our personal opinions and only that. we are not trying to put you off. Cov is still probably one of the best choices in europe (mainly because of the really low standard of other unis around), and definately the only realistic option (for automotive design) in the uk. However, you should be prepared and ready.
just trying to help.

Ciao.

Seriously guys, What Nick and Bacon are saying is true (didn't know you were haunting these forums Heir Raptis!), but don't be put off... Most people have a great time there, and always unite in any things they don't approve of, eg crappy projects / course structure etc, and the lecturers do usually listen to them.

If you work hard, and don't forget to play hard when you need to... you'll all love it... (not that i'm anyone to offer advice)

Anyways, good luck guys, we'll come see ya degree shows one day (if anyone'll still employ us by them, lol Confused)

P.S. 40 projects a year? WTF? Didn't do that many in 5 years!

Right, if you are beeing serious, then...here is the facts.
Germany is great. I have two friends in BMW and they are getting paid really well, plus Munich is very beautifull, the quality of life is at a high standard and they seem to enjoy it a lot.
In switcherland... I have an interview there with a design consultancy (for yachts) and i visited earlier in the summer. It looks good, but it is rather expensive, almost big city british prices.

Austria is really good. It is reasonably cheap, really ... I am not earning a great deal of cash here, and i still have a great time and some money left to stash (possibly for a nice TVR in 2 years time...he..he..) and you get some nice places like Stortz and Kiska for transport projects. Kiska is actually looking for designers, so good luck.

P.S. Living here and having leaved in the Uk for 8 years primary, sometimes, Like Tony Ben before me, i wonder.....who really won this bloody war? i mean, here is like nothing ever happened. they still have industry, job opportunities and good standard of living. In Greece we were considered on the winners side. why we are so far behind now...?

Ok ok so I'm coming to this discussion rather late after the young ones have gone off to weep in their beer and the old hands are lauginh behind their backs but all this discussion about the BA has got me thinking...about my MA that I'm about to sart at Coventry.

Anyone here (lurking or otherwise) completed the MA at Coventry? Can you fill me in on wether I should be cowering with the first years or if it's gonna be $$$$$$$ (or pounds for the pernickety) well spent?

I'm a strongly self motivated stubborn bastard here so I know full well that it'll be what I make of it but if you have any useful advice then throw me a bone :P

Check ya,

Drew

right. No speako Dego either dude, at least before the course.

If you want to erally work on your design skills, including clay modelling, consider only the IED(torino) course in Italy.
The rest of the schools dont give you that chance in the masters, and if you ask me this is unacceptable. Last year i had to transport my own clay from england along with two other guys from the course, so that we have a decent model in our degree show.
The good staff is the theoretical teaching. Allthe tutors are active members in the industry. Favilla is chief designer in stile Alfa Romeo, Campanella is the ergonomist of the gruppo fiat( recent work: Lancia Y, fiat stilo, fiat croma) and we also had tutorials and presentations with Luc Donckerwolke, Perini, and de silva. Really good lectures on form, colours, semeiotics(is called design theory in UK), production techniques both for products and cars, as well as some managenment. Lots of visits(we went to alfa, Fiat, idea and of course we presented in stile Lamborghini. This year is with Audi. However, if you do not understand italian, you will be bored and you will miss most of the good lectures. The school is small, and with the 3-4 occasional exceptions, the quality of the students is really low. I mean, we where 20 and there were only 5 worthy of masters level, and i do not include my self on these. There is a lot of marketing and litte of actual benefits from the course. Most people were dissappointed. If you want contacts, do it but does it worth 8000 euros... i dont think so. For me it was ok, since i just went there for Lamborghini, cause it was my dream. But this year is with Audi.

If you want to evolve as a designer, stay in the UK. there they provide more overall. This is my opinion.
P.S dont be so harsh with people. The more you will work, the more you will appriciate quality of life, and put it higher than design or anything else. You will find that designing a Ferrari is not so easy for most of us, even for those actually working at pininfarina at the moment, just look at the new ones.

hey everyone

during the third year when you actually start designing cars, do you have to provide yourself with your own design brief or are you given one by the tutors...or is there a selction of design briefs and you pick the one you like most? how does it work?

also, do you need to have a client who you design your car for? i.e. a person who can give you feedback on the sketches, whether or not they like it..etc (i hope you understand what i mean)
