i understand ur situation. as ppl said above, if u are going to choose this field as profession, it has to be ur main priority. it goes for many things and you will have to decide sooner or later. this field required lots of amount of time dedicated into and if u are not ready for that, then you wont make through even if u get into college.
I understand where you are coming from. However, I disagree with the notion that your spirituality should somehow be practiced in seperation from what you do "in the world." For me, spirituality is a lifestyle, way of breathing, seeing, thinking, and relating. Ever considered doing design as a response to what the creator has endowed on you--your passion and gifts?
I myself am a career changer from a minister/theology student into an aspiring prospective art center student. While doing this, I have never considered that I was jeopardizing my faith at all. In reverse, I feel ever more livelier and comfortable with the new identity that God has made me to be a "designer."
I recommend you to read Paker Palmer's "Let Your Life Speak" and Clifton's "Strength Finder." These books have helped me immensely on my personal journey as well.
God bless and good luck!
PS: "Whether you eat or sleep, do it for the glory of God...." (From the Corinthians)
i really don't see how school could interfere with your faith that much. i don't know how active you are, but really, i think you'll find time to go to church. most school buildings don't open until a later time on sundays anyway (noon at my school).
so i'd say you're worrying too much here.
but personally i can't say i support even the thought that you'd let religion interfere with your plans and goals for school. faith is a wierd thing.
it's funny the person above me used to be a student in ministry/theology... whereas i used to be a philosophy major before persuing trans design, so accordingly, i leave you with this.
"one has to do no more than to take a casual stroll through an insane asylum to see the problems with faith...." (from Nietzsche)
AMdesign, did you know that Chris Bangle considered pursuing a minister's career after graduating from U of W? However, I have no idea about his current attitude to or involvement faith.
For me, pursuit of a design career is a spiritual journey, no more or less than my previous involvement with religious career.
Let me just say that you have nothing to be confused or ashamed of. Have you ever heard of the phrase "work is worship". Personally I believe that by pursuing my passion, I am making God happy by utilizing the skills He gave me for a common good. Design isnt simply about drawing cars, its about finding practical solutions to problems by expressing ur gifts. I myself have been through a lot of spiritual conflict regarding design, but you know what? I know no that God WANTS me to do it. So I am... hope this helps..
