Just let your alter ego go for it! I won't get upset! I have no axe to grind.

I don't mind, I have met both Janet and JD, once you get past the sarcasm, they both have hearts of gold!

But in contradiction to my previous post, maybe we shouldn't take this over as a cov-grads thread, like we have done before!

Even so you go through all this college and stuff... What about the industries job security... Like How long can you expect to keep your job... I mean many times online I have read a Pro Designers profile and the person would write the she've work for Audi a couple of years... The worked for Nissan, then Ford... It doesnt seem like an extreme stable career to keep... Let's look at the facts... There's probably a lot of designers world wide... how much would we say works for one designer firm... Definately not alot... I'm there's rarely openings for the job... Plus by the time I can get a job like that 6 or maybe 8 years later what are my chances of being replaced by a newer younger employee straight out of college... The companies always want new fresh Ideas, so its constantly out with the old, in with the new... Talk about keeping a job... The way I see it is... If you become a Designer and you dont make a name for your self like J Mays, kiss your job goodbye in 8 years...

Hmmmm, I can't possibly answer that one! JD?

Experience is very hard to come by unless your name is JD+Coke etc.

University/College is not the be all and end all, it only matters if you have talent, talent will get you a job, there are a few people that frequent this very forum that have decent degrees but don't have jobs.

I am a perennial student!

It's either in your blood or it's not. Sometimes you love something so much you just have to go for it. It's equal to dreaming of being a rock star or pro athlete. Not everyone makes it but you won't ever know if you don't try. Regret is a bitch to burden!

If you want stability and guarantees become a doctor or lawyer.

Really? What about John B, or Humpho, or Kris, or Robb, or Goldylocks, or Olly, or Ratpiss, or Randy McG, or Ian G, or Leon? Loads of people got gigs; I was one of the last as I was screwing around doing Playstation concept work.

You know, its better to regret something you have done than something you havent done, and by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, would you be sure and tell her...

All the chinese guys will have gone back home and got cushy jobs there too!

That is still only a handful.

I have experience of the field I want to go into but I need to practice, practice, practice before I can get a job in the ID industry to pay the bills.

Rilwan, if you're gonna give up already go home, stop getting depressed.
Have you thought that people move round cos its healthy for designers to move every few years, to gain experience, move up the food chain, get more money. People can get stale stuck at one desk all their lives. If you're good enough you'll get through the door. Then unless you do something HR doesnt like or you forget how to design and draw, the chances of you getting replaced are slim. The main concern is if you're on a contract and they dont renew it cos you havent performed, then that is your fault, or if your company goes bankrupt (not your fault).
How many designers are out there who haven't made a name for themselves like J Mays?? loads but they keep working and keep drawing. 95-99% of what you do won't go anywhere. But when it does..enjoy it. Are you sure design is what you wanna do? Cheer up and go work at Macdonalds and have job satisfaction there.
