Consider that a home in South East michigan (a large are of emplotment for designers) starts at 200K and shoots skyward from there. Add to that insurance, car payments, food, ect... and that 58K (before tax) doesn't look all that great.
But then again anyone who goes into automotive for the money is a little silly.

I think racerhead2 meant for the whole entire company and not just a single studio? And perhaps he wasn't just referring to the automotive industry as well.

the new nissan design studio only holds 20-25 designers right now, though they are hiring more from its interning program students from ACCD,CCS and etc. we're only talking about DESIGNERS, not employees whos responsible for other operations. i read this article regarding to AUTOMOTIVE designer's salary: its stated a high difference between male and female designers. male:ID DEGREE-60,000-80,000 for first year female:ID DEGREE-55,000-70,000 for first year as an automotive designer, your paid will increase up to 5-10 TIMES as your experience and time gains. so someone like CHRIS BANGLE should make somewhere from 500,000-1,000,000 a year. once you hit a design director for instance, GM or FORD. your salary should hit to a mil+. here's some useful articles: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_07/b3870014.htm
