Yo Burns, is that how you judge what is good and bad? So because Peugeot knock out thousands of 407 coupes that makes it better than... ooh, what do I use as an example now? Ferr... No, too obvious... Ast... Nah, Ben... Nope. Got it! Pinto (just kidding) Alfa 8C.

The Sex Pistols played the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in 1976 infront of 42 people. Research some of those 42 people and try to find a ditzy make-up obsessed teeny-bopper.

And why would he slit his wrists?

No I judge what's good or bad based on how I like it, I've listened to the sex pistols, comes across as some angry punk band, don't care for it at all.

Personally I don't like too much noise in music, as if pretending you have something to say by saying it loudly does any good. Melody, lyrics and vocals are top priorities for me. But some people seem to think as long as your not banging your head to the guitar or the lead singer screaming then you're not "cool" but rather "gay" or "like a woman".

This is NOT my kind of music:

When I see that I don't see someone who is trying to sell his music, I see someone trying to sell an image, an image of "cool", "rebellious", "look at me I can be angry", "I have testosterone" etc... The music is just an accessory to that whole image.

This is tho:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WWtbXpyqPGU
or this (from 4:26 on it is one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=B8wCJ9A0TUg

and this:

and even this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pMRosGMyJ60

Someone like JD will see that and think in his little mind: "the lead singer looks gay or like a fruit or whatever" and thus automatically not like the music. Little does he understand that here they are selling the MUSIC, not the image, they don't give a rat's ass what you think of them. Most people who criticize bands like Coldplay do it because they don't see their image as "cool" (including the sex pistols front man). Where are the tattoos? the drugs? the scandals? the wild hair? the makeup? the heavy guitars? the screaming? head banging? the "testosterone"? Well not here, because they don't need to rely on that crap to get people to notice them, they just need the damn music.

Often times that's hard for some people to get around, instead they think "oh god I'm not going to listen to these weenies", because it's odd to them, they're used to the music being an accessory to an image they wish they could be rather than an art form meant for enjoyment, entertainment and even to help get through the best and worst of what life has to offer.

But in the end we all like different things, if we didn't then this fun thread wouldn't exist.

That was awfully wet and dreary but I did spot my name: YO! Hey you said I had a little mind! That burns Burns. See youve misinterpreted the whole course of this discussion.
We're not argueing about which is better, the Pistols or (guffaw!) Coldplay. Actually we're trying to do you a favour. We know, for example, that you're one of these hopeful eager kids who gets through his aweful $4 an hour job by dreaming of his glorious future as a car design in Coventry (guffaw x 1000), and who's totally convinced that music like Coldplay is going to improve his life.
Sorry kid, thats just not how its going to be, in either case. We find it a little ungrateful, not to say hurtful to our feelings, that all our thoughtful advice not only falls on deaf ears but actually gets mixed with a couple of big spoonfuls of lame and regurgitated back at us. Frankly, its just rude. Why would I single out artists who cross traditional gender boundaries to dislike? That'd be weird, I'd have to erase everything by Bowie, Queen, The Who, The Kinks, The Smiths, Boy George, Tracy Chpman, Cole Porter, KD Lang, Prince, The Stones, etc etc etc. Clearly listening to Coldplay has made you into some kind of homophobic biggot, and thats a real shame.

No JD, listening to music doesn't change you or "give you hope" and certainly not "improve your life" I don't know if that's ever happened to you and if you're speaking from experience (wait, didn't this whole thing start with you saying coldplay makes you feel like a woman?), but to me it's just a form of entertainment. You're questioning me for liking Coldplay instead of something like the Sex Pistols, and I just explained why I would like Coldplay and not the sex pistols. You've made this assumption about my personality or life or whatever and based on it you're giving me "advice", and frankly I find it very funny.

So please, give me some more.

Music doesnt give you hope?
Youre listening to the wrong stuff, as we've already ascertained. It reflects badly on you as a person.

Assumptions?
We know all about you; you've been banging on about your need to move to Coventry since "officially overturning my rule of "art center or nothing" because you're a tiresomely eager tween and have no money. We know youre not sure about getting rich lines when you render (do you erase them after?) We know you dont think any designers read what you write (wrong)
We know youre opinions arnt worth much.

More advice?
OK, follow your dream, go to Coventry, work hard, never ever give up. Then grow up and get a real job that pays properly..

But mainly, Coldplay is baaad medicine.

haha and thanks to that response we know you're a bitter washed up Coventry grad who misinterprets everything he reads! So that's why your music needs to give you hope, you need it!

hilarious stuff JD.

The punchbag swings back for more? Youre such a bermuda triangle of fun its like talking to the feeling you get when the MD wears off on the monday morning they elect Hilter king and he bans fun forever. Youre the disease and The Cure is the cure.

Look, I'll admit much of what Ive said to you I've done so because Canadians are the Irish of the world and its fun teasing you, but I absolutely stand by my advice about Coventry. Using a couple of years in car design as a CV booster means you can quit working with odd canadians who like Coldplay and think dwawing cars is important, and work for yourself. Its excellent, I skate to my office through a park, smoke and drink at my desk and get hundreds of queenquids a day for my trouble. Can you believe that!? I wouldnt mention it but I barely understand it myself. Im not even making it up or selling crack! Its crazy. You know that dream you have of your future? Its like that only Im in it instead of you and instead of Colplay and lonliness theres the Stooges and fun. Of course, you have to be naturally gifted to make it happen but even if you're not, come work for me dawg! I'll treat you right and let you sleep in the kitchen if its raining outside. Think about it! Say you will?

PS Im thinking an NSX. Wouldnt that be rad? I hear they go through tyres though. Ah who cares? What do you think of white, or one of the old shape pop-up light ones with the black roof? You know?

It looks like it's not just Canadians who like Coldplay:
http://www.apple.com/euro/itunes/charts/top10albums.html
#1 in every country.

Now as for the car design goes, right now I'm on leave but in Computer engineering at my local university, looking into becoming a pharmacist instead since the pay is so damn good, and yes, dreaming of becoming a car designer. So there are many options.

Did you ever end up working as a car designer, or what is it you do exactly?
