I LOVE Portishead, their music is so deep and dark but at the same time so beautiful, you have to listen to it. I like Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Air, and there's an album called My Life in the bush of ghosts made by Brian Eno and the Talking heads that is just amazing, also by tthe time they made it (1981).

Linkin Park Metallica Nirvana Gob Three Days Grace Staind U2 (^_^) Theory of a Dead Man AFI Evanescence... to a certain degree Nickleback The Cars System of a Down
Most New Rock/Alternative, punk on the harder side... With a splash of other stuff. No emo~ though I guess some ppl would place punk under emo now since there aren't really any TRUE punk bands left; more just the punk sound. So... those are top rated on my ipod, but I got a bunch of other stuff. I'll listen to pretty much anything but stuff like Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue.... ick.

Guns N' Roses Greatest hits - awesome CD, although they didn't want it released...
Over the past few weeks I just bought a bunch of Metallica CDs, Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice For All, all of which are awesome, now I just have to see them in concert...They better make a Toronto tour date, or I'll be pissed, and I'll have to organize a road trip to Buffalo, Ny, or Montreal. But Buffalo is closer

Why bother seeing Metallica live? If you really like the albums you listed, I don't think it'll be worth it. They went downhill so much in the 90s, and now it feels like they're not even trying anymore. Master of Puppets... now that was a good heavy metal record.
I saw Metallica live on the Big Day Out, the biggest national music festival in Oz. If you like their music, it's definitely worth it just to feel the atmosphere those guys create. Just my opinion.
@SPG900: Sorry for the delay, I was on holidays and completely forgot about this thread.
By the way, didn’t you study musicology and philosophy, or was that someone else on the boards? If that’s the case, man, did I pick the right person for an argument on this topic or what?
The ‘food for thought’ thing is purely subjective; it really depends on circumstance and what someone would define as ‘deep’.
Just a question, do you regard industrial and in this case automotive design as a form of art? A yes or no will suffice if you don’t wish to stray from the initial topic too much.
I don’t demand that singers should play an instrument. I agree with you that a great vocalist is as valuable as a great instrumentalist. The thing that makes singing as a form of expression so valuable is the ability to use language to convey thoughts and emotions in a way an instrument never could. But the thing that bugs me is that most people listening to music don’t give enough credit to people that play instruments. They don’t see the whole picture. They gape at a singer hitting high notes but wouldn’t care if the rest of the music is coming from a tape or from a live band.
Dusty Springfield. I heard about the ‘white lady of soul’, but to be honest, I didn’t hear too many songs from her. I’m not sure if you’re mocking me in a friendly way, but I actually like jazz and blues
You’re assuming too much, I didn’t say that commercialised artist equals a lack of talent. I’m not a person who bashes musicians that are mainstream-oriented mindlessly just because it’s cool. I actually like Goodrem. As far as I know, she wrote some songs herself and some of them were co-written. She displays an impressive amount of talent for her age, if you ask me. I don’t mind catching one of her songs in the radio once in a while, but I wouldn’t buy one of the albums simply because it’s too mundane for my tastes.
Heh, I said I didn’t know much about classical music, but I’d love to learn more. Regarding the recording of material, I completely forgot about contemporary classical music and the separation between composing and performing. One thing you can’t forget though is that there are huge differences between classical music and any contemporary genre. You don’t see any non-classical composers (I’m not counting producers and songwriters writing material for pop artists) creating pieces for anyone else on such a scale.
To some degree, different renditions of a classical piece can be compared to a modern artists live performance, because most of them sound completely different live since it's impossible to wring the result in real-time through the production process.
I know the way how songs ‘stick’ to a moment in your life, although it doesn’t have to be necessarily pop music that does the trick in my case. I believe that depends what sort of music you’re exposed to, so it’s understandable that you didn’t experience that with classical music. I assume that you don’t hear it often in your environment besides in your own place. Regarding covers, I most often find that it isn’t a specific rendition of a song that reminds me of a memory, but the melody and the lyrics.
I’m not going to tell you to shut up, because what you say interests me, but you’re free to tell me if my babbling is boring
Well, I like the albums, and I hear that they're awesome in concert, and I only like a few songs off of the albums after Black (Load, RELoad, etc.) But the rest are crazy/heavy/fast...
So, I'm going to go to the concert anyways.
