Depends I guess.. if you do freelance work you get paid per job, if you are employed by a design studio you probably get paid monthly.
One tip for you, this is not the forum to ask about salary, because most of us, including me, find the passion and satisfaction way more important than the green bills. I guess the saying said here many times before goes "If you're in it for the money, don't do it"
Design is a mix of ideas, madness and realism, and you've got to find the best compromise "Same sausage, different length"

I second Maxxi's opinion. If the amount of money means a lot to you, this job will not make you millions of dollars. If you want to make tons of money, try export import trading, or be a plastic surgeon.
or play a sport, or act or become a superstar muscian. Oh BTW you'd have a better chance succeeding at those then actually becoming a designer.
Just droping statistical fact.

Like with any career the starting salary is at its minimum. As a junior car designer fresh out of school, you can expect a salary of 40g's-60g's a year. But it all depends how good you are and who hires you. Over all this career depends on your talent and you ambition to push your skill, once you reach the top with a status such a head designer or a director of a design studio, then the paychecks can range in 6 figure + range, at which sky is the limit. In the end you are selling your ideas and talent, the price tag of which will depend on the individual.
