ok, i went to college and "mastered" maya... however at the moment i can't direct you to a specific tutorial but just bear with me and try this out
you should use a program like photoshop for all of your texturing... but first you want to set up your UVs for texturing... you can usually find good tutorials on this on the web in different places, ill try to find some and edit my post for you... but once you set up your UVs you open your UV texture editor in maya and you lay them out so that you can tell which part is which and then take a UV snapshot (there's a tool in maya that says UV snapshot) and that will basically make an image of the uv file... load that up in photoshop and paint over top of it and then save it to whatever resolution you want (higher the better but if you're working under a limit keep that in mind)... load it back into maya and apply it as a "color" to a shader... when you assign that shader to the surface you set up the UV's for it will automatically match up (because you painted over the specific UV layout in Pshop)... i know for someone new it sounds like a jungled up mess but the more you get to know the tools and familiarity you can get a basic idea and work off of that... now i'm off to find you some tuts.
That's the best peice of ham you've ever eaten isn't it?
look around there for some inspiration and help, its awesome... i also suggest sites like http://www.cgnetworks.com and http://www.cgchannel.com. best of luck and once you start UV mapping i'd like to see some of your work to see how you're doing!
