You can be a car designer, without using any software as those legendary designers, and you may be a great designer by your nature but you have to express yourself and show your design so you must be able to sketch your concept using pencils and paper and knowing what you are designing!
But! You may need to learn and use software for:
1- Digital presentation of your sketches in 2d using Photoshop or similar programs and digital sketching and painting features in StudioTools
2- 3D presentation of your early concept using any of many good 3d modeling and rendering packages like 3ds Max, XSI, C4D ..., etc. I personally like Maya and Rhino for early stages of design and visualizing the concept because of their speed and usability and useful features for this purpose also can be done in StudioTools and other CAD packages.
3- High quality 3d modeling of your design for engineering, testing, simulations, and production so you need high quality (class-A) surfaces using StudioTools, ICEM Surf, Imageware as primary class-A surface modelers and Catia and NX(Unigraphics and I-Deas)as high-end total CAD/CAM/CAE packages with powerful 3d solid and surface modeling being widely used in automotive industry. You may need to learn other program depending on your future job.
So look further and see what you want to do in future and take the right path and learn about the necessary tools you will need.
