Most people do prefer using a tablet. I'm using the intuos 3 style.

Most people within the industry use one of Wacoms tablets. By using one of these you will gain a level of control just not available with a mouse. Having said that, you should be aware that Photoshop is not the best tool for sketching in. I am not sure, but i suspect that Photoshop elements does not have the SMOOTHING functionality (found in the brushes menu)of the latest version of photoshop. This means that if you sketch fast, photoshop breaks your smoothly drawn curve into little straight lines. Other programs such as coral draw and painter to my understanding do not have this problem.

Having said all that a recent contributor (Hussein Al-Attar) to www.designertechniques.com has shown how he produces very impressive rendering results using only a mouse, and paths in Photoshop.
