Why not have a picture gallery of cars on the site? I have gotten quite tired of doing an internet search of a car and finding 80% tuner cars, 15% low-quality press release pics and 5% of the results are the pictures I really want. I think a picture gallery of a few good pictures of a wide range of cars would be very time-saving and useful. (Not just the new cars and concepts from shows)
I'm not talking about members' cars. I'm referring to just regular cars that there may be topics about. Like, if I wanted to see a Seat or Citroen or something, I don't know where to get a good picture of their models and internet searches are sometimes not the best for finding quality pictures. It'd be nice to have a list of all kinds of car manufacturers and their models, with thumbnail pictures of their 3/4 views to give people a mental picture of the car. This is helpful when someone mentions a car in the forums and I don't know what it looks like.
i think its a good idea, but if everyone started uploading their collection, think about the file sizes and the space it would take in the website, on top of the portfolios, forum threads, degree and motor show galleries...etc. i think it would cost more to run the website aswell... would it become slower too?
I don't think Sven is talking about members uploading images... just that we have galleries of current and past production and concept cars. We should be able to start building this sort of archive - our new database system launching soon should make it possible to start this in the next few months.
We could add a request form, or keep track of what people are regularly searching for as well...
It's a good enough idea really. It would definately save most of the users on this site a lot of time. Although that definately could take up a lot of bandwidth for a site that isn't totally dedicated to just images of the cars.
They have A LOT of cars on that site. Brands I've never heard of, some that died in the early 30s and such. It's definetely a good site for those who want images of certain cars. Definately some of the weird autos that are on the site have given me ideas for my own designs. Definately worth a look.
Brett is right that I didn't mean us downloading our pictures. I like the idea of the reqest form and search tracker thing. Also, those kinds of sites are good to a certain degree, but take this for example: Has anyone heard of the Buckle 2+2 coupe? It's an extremely rare (and handsome) car from the 60's that I ran across in my Encyclopedia of Automobiles. Unfortunately, the only picture that I could find is the small, black and white one in the book. These are some of the kind of things that could be on the site, along with well-known cars. It would basically be a car design database. There wouldn't have to be wallpaper-quality pictures, either. Just medium-sized pics to get the jist of the lines of the sheetmetal (aka the contours of the body ).
