Is it just me, or have people stopped holding design contests that I can actually enter (not just for design students)?

You could try entering other design competitions.

It doesn't have to be car design comps, there are normally plenty of types like graphics, logo's, products etc. And they normally have less restrictions.

Some have a good age range and they don't care whether you are a seasoned designer or a high school student.

Why a rumor? Peugeot hase been realeasing a design contest theme at every Paris motor show since 2002.

It's a shame that MotorTrend didn't hold one this year. Any idea about the reasons?

We're at the end of 2005 and they hav'nt annouced a contest for this year yet. If someone wanted to sponsor a design contest, and they read the forum in the peugeot contest website, I doubt that they would want to spend money on a car design contest. The sore losers who's projects did'nt make the finals, complained that the contest was unfair and the judges were stupid. It's quite possible that moovie won the contest because the sore losers who thought it was'nt good enough to be in the finals, delibratly voted for the worst finalist to embarress peugeot. Since the quality of a design is a very subjective thing, anyone organizing a contest has to face the risk that the judges will pick a winner that most of the contestants wont like. If the majority of the contestants wont appreaciate what he's doing why should he bother? Even speedanddesign has given up on car design contests, their new contest is design a mega-yacht. I dont think moovie was a bad design, I think it may have been a little ahead of its time, this year a nissan concept car and a few of the winners of the interior motives design contest look like they were inspired by moovie.

First of all, The next Paris motor show will be in September 2006 because it's biannual. The last one was in September 2004, where the announced the theme of the 3rd contest.
Did you follow the 2nd Contest of 2002? If you did, then should know that people wrote even more in the forums of the contest's site than what you've read (or maybe written) about the last contest. At that time a lot of people said that peugeot won't start a new contest after all this criticism - but there was one.
Whatever people wrote in the forums, Peugeot is not going to decide organazing a contest according to the reactions of those who were frustrated because they didn't make into the top 30.

Maybe they should do some kind of online design contest, like by the designers, for the designers, where everyone can vote and it's the popular vote that wins. That way there wouldn't be any "Oh, the judges eat poop" kind of ideas floating around. The designs would be judged by you and your peers. The only problem might be people hacking in to change the votes.

MK1 Golf all the way!

That was what was wrong with the last contest, it was conducted entirely on the internet. A good hacker can get into your computer and make it do whatever he wants it to do. I have read some anecdotes on the web about people complaining that peugeot's computer would not let them submit their entry. or that somebody cheated by deleting the best entries from peugeot's computer, so their entry could win. While I'm not confident these rumors are true, it would explain alot of things.
