Dear Design community, respondents and entrants in the World In Motion Design Contest.

In accordance with the publicized content and correspondence regarding the New Triumph Company’s first international car design contest.

I am pleased to announce the results of the competition and the joint winners are:

TRE - Luke Norman Price. England.
TRE - Peter Colombus. Greece.
TRC - Abraham Ramirez Moreno. Mexico.
TRC - Andrej Pariza. Slovakia.
TRX4 - Yuan Wang. England.
TRX4 - Ali Ismail. Jordan.

How I arrived at these conclusions are detailed below.

Background.

It has been a long and winding road to the final judgment, and like all new experiences it has been one rich in knowledge, learning, and reward. When I set out on this new path, I didn’t anticipate becoming the adjudicator so I sincerely hope my conclusions are accepted in the course and interest of fair play. The responsibility to get it right was a challenging one and only now can I fully respect why the design guru’s opted out.

There are 18 entries from around the world so on behalf of the designers that entered this contest; I salute you and pass on my gratitude – as you made my own effort worthwhile.

Thank you very much indeed. Graham Farmer

TRE.

The TRE sports cars attracted the most interest and the quality of all entries was exceptional. It really was hard to choose.

After careful consideration I settled on the designs tendered by Luke Norman Price of England, and Peter Colombus of Greece. The main factors I considered were principally the transmutation of the “triumph for the environment” ideology in to an emotive eco-motive sports car concept.

Deciding which of the two finalists was more appropriate was hard because they each pulled in different directions. Where Luke’s imaginative designs illustrate practicality and commendable innovation, the concept is not by definition a sports car in the traditional sense. It does however offer an exciting alternative vision, which is broadly speaking moving in a new direction. The scale of the submission is also very impressive.

I contrasted this with the inventive eco-mix and brutal confidence of the Peter Colombus concept, which remarkably I had to mark down for being presented in the old Triumph name. But there really was only one winner – the design contest and consequently a settled on evens and a well-deserved draw.

TRC.

The TRC model was an entirely different call because the brief was fixed to a rally cross breed and street car variant, which would (a) establish a distinctive design and racing aura, and (b) help support the awakening of the FIA to the concept of energy-efficient motor sport with the Ferdinand Porsche inspired RallyE Series.

No single submission fulfilled this criteria exactly but I was very impressed with the art offered by Andrej Pariza of Slovakia, and Abraham Ramirez Moreno of Mexico.

Abraham provided by far the best RallyE racing identity, but unfortunately this great effort was let down by the car design which was not truly in the image and mould of the TRC racing/street car brief.

Similarly on the other side of the world, Andrej offered a car design which did not originally address, nor fit, the brief. His last-minute reworked submission was so improved that he earned a draw out of Abraham and the TRC contest resulted in a dead heat.

For these reasons I decided the prize should be shared but I would just like to mention that there is enough positive information from your submissions to support the 2006 RallyE Series flag-waving enquiry at FIA, Geneva. We will of course keep you posted.

TRX4.

Yuan Wang, and Ali Fayez Ismail of Jordan hotly contested the SUV category with imaginatively crafted proposals.

I didn’t think there was much to choose between the two designs in order to select an outright winner because to me they are both great designs and offer something unusual each displaying its own distinctive form and character, though I felt Yuan just edged it for sporting resonance.

That said, Ali’s design incorporated the universal globe logo, which at least suggested his design had been developed for the World In Motion competition. With this view in mind, I decided to follow the same results as the TRE, and TRC, categories and declare another shared prize.

Mini-Cab.

There were only three Mini-Cab entries all told, and whilst these comprised of some excellent models of future public transportation systems, I didn’t think any reflected near future prospects that we could present to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Committee as a serious alternative to the concurrent vehicles.

I also didn’t think the submissions challenged the brief, which in essence was for a compact relative of the purpose-built black cab, which evidently is recognized the world over as part of the cultural fabric of the City of London.

I also didn’t think there was enough serious thought behind the interplay of the World In Motion contest, the vehicle design, the 2012 London Olympics, the refueling infrastructure and the megacity environment to even consider a winner in this category.

I therefore pulled the Mini-Cab prize and hope this is acceptable to the three entrants. I hope the judges decision is final in this instance but please get in touch if you feel cheated.

In Conclusion, I’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate my thanks and gratitude to all the World In Motion respondents and entrants. I apologise some were not successful on this occasion but I wish you all good luck in the future.

We hope to announce the 2007 World In Motion 2 design contest: “Wheels In Motion” in January/February, which we hope will link with an official announcement regarding exhibiting at the 2007 Frankfurt Show.

Grateful thanks until then.
